Source code and data

Climhack is powered by the Carbo Code, a simplified methodology for assessing the whole life embodied carbon of building projects (free download at www.climatecture.com).

At the time of launch, Climhack heavily relies on emission factors from the ICE database (https://circularecology.com/embodied-carbon-footprint-database.html). The ICE emission factors are drawn from data from around the world and can be used as a 'proxy' in the absence of country-specific data (https://circularecology.com/ice-database-faqs.html).

We have also populated the database with emission factors for materials that were not in the ICE database and that we found relevant. To support 'vernacular' architecture, an emphasis has been placed on 'alternative' building materials such as earth materials, stones, etc.

Please note that you have the option to add your own materials to a project. To do so, click 'Add your own materials' on the main page and complete the form. Your materials will appear in your account, where you can add them to a project.
